Optometric Technician

About the Position

The Optometric Technician provides assistance to the Optometrist in providing vision correction to the patient. The Optometric Technician helps with eye examinations, performs clerical duties, and maintains the examination equipment.

Primary duties:
  • Assist with patient care and eye examinations.

  • Explain the examination process to patients, prepare them, and administer visual exam.

  • Provide exceptional customer service during all patient encounters.

  • Chart patient’s vision history.

  • Maintain patient records.

  • Perform minor repairs on broken or damaged glasses.

  • Maintain inventory of contact lens, contact lens solution, etc.

  • Operate manual lensometer, auto-lensometer, autofractor/keratometer, retinal camera, visual field, GDX, or OCT.

  • Follow scripting for testing equipment.

  • Sanitize all examination equipment.

  • Set phoropter to patient RX or re-set to plano (per Doctor’s request).

  • Display working knowledge of eye anatomy, diseases, symptoms, and ocular medications.

Secondary Duties:
  • General office duties.

  • Cleaning as assigned by supervisor.

  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Ocasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 25 lbs (+-30%) of the time

  • Occasional standing/walking/climbing (+-50%) of the time

  • Sitting in a normal position for an extended time (+-50%) of the time

  • Occasional reaching/handling/feeling (+-70%) of the time

  • Frequent use of finger dexterity (+-70%) of the time

  • Ideal candidate should have high school diploma/GED.

  • Optical: 1 -2 years preferred

Computer Skills:
  • Proficient with keyboarding and the ability to enter notes efficiently and accurately into patient’s EHR.

Other Skills/Ability:
  • Ability to multi-task.

  • Excellent time management, organizational, and planning skills with ability to work independently.

  • Ability to interact and communicate with a variety of people.

  • Strong attention to detail.
